Cloudflare Rocket Loader Delivers App-Like Speeds to Any Website

San Francisco, CA, May 25, 2011

Cloudflare, the web performance and security company, today announced the beta of its Rocket Loader, a free service that automatically optimizes the code on your site so you can get app-like page load speeds.

Cloudflare Rocket Loader ensures websites load as fast as possible based on the device and code on the page, even if that code is pulled from a third party service. Third party services, like the ad networks, the Facebook “Like” button, or the Twitter “Tweet” button have previously been performance-robbing culprits that can slow down a site, even if the site owner has optimized their own code.

“Every webmaster has experienced the frustration of a message in the lower-left corner of the browser saying it is waiting for some third-party widget to load,” said Matthew Prince, CEO and co-founder of Cloudflare. “Cloudflare Rocket Loader gives webmasters full control of their sites by allowing them to ensure that even third party widgets are loaded through the minimum number of network connections at the maximum possible speed.”

Rocket Loader was inspired in part by the work of Google on their SPDY web protocol. The SPDY protocol allows multiple resources to be delivered via a minimum number of network connections. While SPDY is limited to only the Chrome browser, Cloudflare’s Rocket Loader brings this same performance to a wide range of browsers, and especially rocks on smartphones and other mobile devices.

“Each new network connection on a mobile device is another opportunity for your network provider to fail,” explained Chris Joel, an engineer at Cloudflare who was on the team that created Rocket Loader. “While Rocket Loader dramatically improves the performance on desktops and laptops, where it really takes off is web browsing on mobile devices.”

Cloudflare is provisioned via DNS, meaning web administrators do not need to add hardware, install software, or change their code to get the benefits of Cloudflare, including Rocket Loader. Announced today at TechCrunch Disrupt New York City, Cloudflare Rocket Loader is available as a no-cost option for any website on the Cloudflare network, regardless of whether they are on a free or pro plan.
