Unlike other providers who charge you massive egress fees when you want to retrieve data, R2 provides zero-cost egress for stored objects and a generous free tier. 10 million free class B operations equals 3-4 requests per second for free each month. Above this range, R2 charges significantly less per-operation than other major providers.

Traditional object storage charges developers for three things: bandwidth, storage size and storage operations.

Egress bandwidth is often the largest charge for developers utilizing object storage and is also the hardest charge to predict. R2 provides zero-cost egress for stored objects — no matter your request rate. That doesn’t mean we are shifting bandwidth costs elsewhere. Once you go above your free tier allocation, Cloudflare R2 is priced at $0.015 per GB of data stored per month — significantly cheaper than other major providers.

To improve performance, we’re constantly adding new regions served by R2 to lower the latency when accessing objects. Similar to what we’ve built with jurisdictional restrictions for Durable Objects, we’ll also enable restricting where a R2 bucket places data to comply with privacy regulations.

We’re focusing on expanding R2 capabilities, including object lifecycle policies and more granular ACL controls to better scope data access.
